This painting I call the color of pain as it represents a color pain scale with blue as no pain and red as the worst pain imaginable. It shows that pain is transmitted by neurons.
Nearly everyone will experience pain at some point in their life, and up to one third of the population experiences long-lasting or chronic pain. Pain is transmitted from the initial site of injury by receptors called nociceptors into the central nervous system. It is then transmitted through the central nervous system to the cortex. Multiple areas of the cortex are activated by pain including areas involved in the sensation and emotional components of pain. Activation and communication between neurons transmits the pain signal so that we perceive the pain signal.
